6.2 Black Calibration
In high-end broadcast cameras such as Grass Valley’s LDX 86 series, Black Calibration is an
automated procedure that improves the image quality by re-mapping black level for each pixel
to keep a consistent sensitivity over the entire image.
When to apply
The Black Calibration procedure must be applied in the following cases (a message “Black
Calibration needed” appears in the viewfinder):
•
After restarting the camera;
•
After changing the video mode;
Tip
✎
It is also recommended to run the Black Calibration procedure when the ambient temperature
conditions change by more than 20 °C or 36 °F.
The best results are achieved when camera settings and calibration conditions are similar to
the intended shooting situation, for example, shortly before a shooting.
How to apply
To start the Black Calibration procedure proceed as follows:
•
Switch on the XCU and camera and wait for the system to become fully operational and
warmed up to the ambient temperature.
•
In the camera menu, go to the
SERVICE
>
TEST
SIGNALS
menu and switch on the
Sawtooth test signal with the
TEST
SIGNAL
item.
–
Make sure that the
TEST
SELECT
item is set to SawT.
•
In the camera menu, go to the
SERVICE
>
CALIBRATIONS
>
BLACK
CALIBR
menu and
select the
BLACK
CALIBR
item.
•
The Black Calibration procedure starts and runs for approximately 10 to 15 seconds. You
can monitor the calibration process using the
STATUS
item.
•
After the procedure has finished, switch off the Test Signal. The camera is now ready for
use.
Tip
✎
The results of the Black Calibration procedure are NOT stored in memory; after restarting the
camera or changing the video mode, calibration results are reset to their defaults.
