Anode Rod Protection
The tank of your water heater is protected by a magnesium or
aluminum anode rod. The rod absorbs the corrosive action of
hot water to prolong the tank's life. Through normal use, the
anode rod will deteriorate. For this reason, annual replace-
ment of the anode rod is recommended by the manufacturer.
Water containing high levels of iron and/or sulfate will increase
the rate of anode rod deterioration; requiring more frequent
replacement. The water heater manufacturer recommends
replacement of the anode rod when consumption or weight
loss is greater than 75 percent (see photo below).
Operating the water heater without the proper anode rod pro-
tection will decrease tank life and will void the manufacturer’s
warranty. To extend the anode life, drain the water from the
water heater tank whenever the RV is not being used. Avoid
any extended time of non-use with water in the tank.
To prevent a water leak when replacing the anode rod, a pipe
thread sealant approved for potable water (such as Teflon
Tape) should be applied to the threads of the anode rod.
Proper application of a thread sealant will not interfere with
the anode’s tank protection.
Pressure & Temperature Relief Valve
A pressure and temperature (P & T) relief valve is a safety re-
quirement for all water heaters. This valve releases any unsafe
pressure in the water heater tank created as cold water is
heated. It is normal for the P & T relief valve to release a small
quantity of water during the heating cycle.
One way to reduce water dripping from the P & T relief valve
is to maintain an air pocket at the top of the water heater. This
air pocket will form in the tank by design; however,
it will be reduced over time by the everyday use of
your water heater (refer to the manufacturer’s man-
ual); If the weeping persists, consult your dealer or
a service agency authorized by the water heater
manufacturer.
Water temperatures over
125°F (49°C) can cause
severe burns instantly
or death from scalds;
therefore, be careful when
using hot water. Always
test the water temperature
before showering or
washing.
WARNING
Brand New Anode Rod (top)
Corroded Anode Rod (bottom)
Do not replace any
component part with an
accessory part that is not
authorized by the water
heater manufacturer, such
as an “add-on” electric
heating element. Such
items are not approved
to be installed and could
create an unsafe condition
and will void all warranties.
