E-ABS
12
1. Introduction
The E-ABS is a module of the APC100y and APC200d application cards which allows to interface
up to two absolute encoders with the SSI or ENDAT serial protocol.
When 2 encoders are connected, they must have some protocol and bit number.
Note!
Simultaneous reading of two encoders ca happen only if the encoders are the same
type (SSI or ENDAT) and they must have the same number of bit.
The previous card, with just one encoder interface (working with SSI serial protocol only), was
named E-ABS hardware rev B; thanks to the E hw revision, it has become a general card with
two encoder interfaces (Sw revision C, “SSI” only; sw revision D “SSI & ENDAT”).
In this manual the APC cards are referred to as application cards. The differences between the
B and the E hardware revision are stated within brackets.
The card revision index can be detected on the component side near the card screen printing
(E-ABS code) where a label states the revision index (B,E, etc.). Index firmware revision can be
verified reading “D2” components on the card (C,D,ecc).
The E-ABS card consists of:
- 2 interfaces for a serial absolute encoder (1 interface for the B revision)
The encoder is not power supplied via the interface.
The foreseen encoder type is SSI or ENDAT protocol with 25 precision bits. The card has been
tested with the following encoders: Heidenhain EQN 425 SSI, ROQ 425 SSI, EQN 1325 SSI
and EQN 425 ENDAT.
It is also possible to connect a SSI protocol encoder whose bit number can be parameterized
from 1 to 25 bits. In this case the reading procedure is called multibit and owns separate
commands.
The E-ABS card has a 3.000 or a higher firmware version.
At the power up, starts the initialization and automatic verification of the type of absolute encoder
(around 2 seconds), if the encoder is not wired, default setting will be “SSI”.
