Garrett Metal Detectors
UNIT ASSEMBLY
This section covers installation of
SmartScan
into existing
Garrett walkthrough metal detectors, as well as proper
methods to stabilize the detector unit.
Note:
When
SmartScan
is purchased as part of a com-
plete walkthrough unit, the detector assembly process
should be followed that is detailed in the Garrett walk-
through metal detector's user manual. The process that
follows provides details of installing a
SmartScan
Thermal
Screening Unit into an existing Garrett detector.

Installation into Existing Garrett Walkthrough
The following steps are required to install the
SmartScan
Thermal Screening Unit into an existing Garrett
MZ
6100
or
PD 6500i
walk-through metal detector.
1.
Turn off the walkthrough unit and disconnect AC
power.
2.
With two people, carefully lower the walkthrough
unit onto the ground with the detection unit face
down.
3.
Unscrew the four screws that secure the crosspiece
to the walk-through panels and remove the cross-
piece, leaving the screws in their panel holes to
help align the
SmartScan
detection unit. Install the
SmartScan
unit by positioning its mounting holes
onto the screws and then partially tightening
them. Stand the walk-through unit up and then
fully tighten the
SmartScan
mounting screws to
ensure the walk-through unit is level with all four
feet making contact with the floor.
Note:
SmartScan
adds 25 lbs. of weight once
installed, so the unit will feel significantly heavier
when standing up the walkthrough. Use caution
when lifting.
4.
Open the walk-through detection head door panel
and remove existing AC cable by disconnecting it
from the power supply and the side panel. Then
remove the controller module cover held by three
screws (Figure 2-4).
Install the RS485 cable and remove the rubber
plug from the inside of the control box (Figure
2-5). Run the RS485 cable through the top.
Replace the controller module cover with the
three screws.
5.
Using the power cord jumper that comes with
SmartScan
, connect the plug into the side panel
and connect the shorter cable length receptacle
(Figure 2-6) into the power supply (Figure 2-7).
Feed the longer cable length receptacle up through
the hole in the detection unit along with the
RS485 cable (Figure 2-8). Close the detection
head door.
