3.7 Auto-Tracker
NOTE:
When using a tracker mode, do not use the zoom function
unless the track box is adjusted to maintain the tracked
target within the tracker box. Uncoordinated use of the
zoom function could cause the tracker to lose lock on the
target.
The Auto-Tracker is one of the most important features of the SeaFLIR II
Imaging System. This feature operates on both the IR and CCD
cameras. The Auto-Tracking system is intended to aid the operator, not
to replace him. It is better to learn to use the system in the manual mode
before adding the Auto-Tracker operation to your skills. When you
master the Auto-Tracker, you will find it very useful to overall system
management. It gives you an invaluable capability – it allows the
operator to take his eyes off the display shortly to perform other functions
with high probability of not losing the target under track despite the
maneuvering of the target or host platform.
For new operators, the expectations for the Auto-Tracking function can
initially be too high, leading them to reject its true value. If you compare
the Auto-Tracking function to cruise control on a car, you can appreciate
this point. Cruise control is very useful on the open road as it gives the
driver a break from constant accelerator input. If, however, you are in
heavy traffic with varying speeds, you are constantly kicking the car in
and out of cruise control. Likewise, Auto-Tracking has its value,
