Digital Music Formats & Tags
What is a Tag?
Most digitally encoded file formats allow information about each file to be embedded within the
file itself. This information is often referred to as “metadata” and is included within the file and
is commonly called a “tag”. A tag can include all kinds of information about the file such as:
artist name, album name, track number, year, genre, and even cover art graphics.
What is a File Format?
Fireball Music Server products can manage and play the following types of digital music files:

MP3
x
WMA
x
WAV
x
FLAC (not supported on SE-80)
Note: Fireball E-40/ requires E2 software update. http://www.escient.com/eupdate/ to manage
FLAC files.
What kinds of Tags does FireBall Support?
In order for the Fireball to properly display the metadata (artist name, album name, track
number, year, genre, and cover art) from your digital music files, the file must contain a
properly formatted tag embedded within the music file itself. FireBall supports different types of
tags, depending on the file format being imported. The following list describes the
corresponding tag which each music format requires.
x MP3 - ID3 Version 1.0, 1.1, 2.2, and 2.3
x WMA - WMA Metadata
x WAV (Format does not include metadata. See Further Naming Conventions
below.)
x
FLAC - Ogg Vorbis Style Tags
Note: ID3 version 2.3 tags must be used if you want to import cover art.
