Hydraulic Retrieval Tool
22
40. If primary packing has sealed and the pressure inside the tool has been bled off successfully,
tighten all locking pins on the access fitting. The pins must be tightened evenly around the access
fitting (in a cross pattern), in order to avoid the plug being pushed against one side of the fitting.
Therefore, screw in all pins until they touch the plug. Then tighten one by one approx. ¼ of a turn,
and repeat until all locking pins are sufficiently tightened. Expect a total of 3-4 turns for adequate
tightening.
41. If the locking pins suddenly stop after only 1-3 turns, or if they can easily be screwed all the way in
(4-5 turns) without any resistance, this indicates that the plug is not quite in position. Loosen all
pins, retrieve the plug/probe assembly again, and look for damages that might prevent proper
installation.
42. When the plug is fixed in position by the locking pins, the pressure in the retriever
can be released. Set the pump to “retrieve” and the pump shall show 0.
43. Close the bleed off valve and wait for 1-2 minutes. Then open it again and see if
pressure has built up inside the retriever.
If the plug is leaking, put pump in “install mode” and put at least 100 bar over line
pressure. Loosen locking pins and then retighten them.
If the leaks are
still there, the plug will have to be pulled for inspection (Follow the
same steps of this procedure as used before).
44. Providing no leaks occur, the retrieval tool can be removed. Loosen the hammer
nut, and unscrew it completely from the service valve. Be aware of fluid that might
flow out when the retriever is being disconnected. Set the pump to “install” and
pump until the connecting rod is fully extended. Continue to pump until the gauge
on the pump shows that the pressure inside the retriever is at least 50 bars. Close
the head valve on the retrieval tool and release the pressure in the pump.
45. Unscrew the safety nut on the quick couplings and disconnect the hoses from the
retriever. Unscrew the retrieval tool connecting rod from the plug by rotating the
retrieval tool. Close the service valve ball closest to the access fitting to confirm that the plug is fully
installed.
46. Use the hammer to loosen the service valve from the hydraulic access fitting. Remove the valve.
Figure 9: Steps 38 - 45
When the tool is fully extracted, make sure the gap between the retriever
and the service valve is the same as when the operation started. Gap must
be approx. 10 mm (1/2”). If this gap is significantly bigger, replace retriever
(open head valve, put pump in “retrieve” and pump to the retriever and
valve mates again. Add 20 bar and fasten hammer nut. Start with step 19
and go through the process again (renew primary packing if compressed).
