Display Output Behavior
Display Output Behavior
Default behavior and compatibility of display output varies slightly depending on boot type used.
- Legacy boot uses Legacy VGA BIOS (also referred to as VBIOS).
- UEFI boot use Graphics Output Protocol (GOP) driver.
UEFI boot (GPT partitioning) is recommended for Windows
®
10. Skylake and newer platforms are officially only
validated, by Intel
®
, with GOP driver.
Legacy boot (MBR partitioning) is tested and basic functionality is confirmed to work, but there may be unknown
limitations and bugs with some OS variants.
Legacy Boot limitations:
- The DVI-I output is not stable when set as secondary display. To solve this, the BIOS has been fixed so that
DVI-I is set as Primary if output is connected at boot.
- Max two displays can be active during BIOS/POST process or when booted from old Legacy USB Boot
devices.
- The third display will be enabled after Operating System with appropriate driver is loaded.
Boot display setup:
Primary and Secondary display will be set automatically by default, but you can define your own setup for situations
where this is required.
Procedure:
- Enter BIOS by pressing Del key during boot.
- Go to "Advanced -> Video Configuration"
- Select preferred setup in Boot display option.
Available
options:
- Auto (default). See info below more details.
-
DVI1+DP
-
DVI1+DVI2
-
DVI2+DP
-
DP+DVI2
- DVI1 is the output marked DVI-I
- DVI2 is the output marked DVI-D
- Press F10 and Enter to save settings and reboot.
Auto option behavior:
- Primary and Secondary display will be set automatically depending on what outputs are connected during
boot and according to the output priority.
- Priority: DVI-I > DP > DVI-D
- DVI-I is always set as Primary if connected. It cannot be set as Secondary due to the limitation
described earlier.
- If all three outputs are used, the DVI-D will not be active until OS is loaded.
- Note that this option is only available if Boot Type is set to Legacy or Dual Boot. For UEFI Boot it is not
required as it’s handled by GOP driver.
