LAN Setup
To give more than four computers access to the external network, the Eicon 1550/1551
can be connected to a network hub and become part of a Local Area Network (LAN).
To do this, you must use an Ethernet crossover cable (not included) to connect your
hub to any of the four Ethernet ports on the Eicon 1550/1551. You can also use a
standard Ethernet cable if your hub has an uplink or cascade port.
This section provides general guidelines for connecting the Eicon 1550/1551 to a LAN.
Due to the wide range of networking equipment and topologies that are in use
worldwide, your configuration needs may fall outside the instructions presented here.
Contact your network administrator or other support person to help you with the
installation.

Important Points
When connecting the Eicon 1550/1551 to your LAN, keep in mind the following
important points.
• The Eicon 1550/1551 has a built-in DHCP server that is on by default. When a
computer on the LAN requests an IP address, the Eicon 1550/1551 will respond
automatically. However, if the Eicon 1550/1551 detects an existing DHCP server on
your LAN, its own DHCP services will be deactivated. To re-activate DHCP in this
case, disable the existing DHCP server and press the Eicon 1550/1551’s reset button.
• The Eicon 1550/1551 has a default LAN IP address of 192.168.1.1. When you attempt
to access the Eicon 1550/1551 over the LAN for the first time, your computer’s network
adapter must have an IP address that is on the same subnet as the Eicon 1550/1551’s
default IP address, i.e., you must have the IP address 192.168.1.2, or 192.168.1.3,
etc.
If you are using the Eicon 1550/1551 as a DHCP server, your computer must be set
to acquire its IP address automatically. You must then force your computer to request
a new IP address (see
Forcing a New IP Address Request using Windows
on
page 31 for more information).
If you have an existing DHCP server, you must manually change the IP address of
the computer you are using to configure the device to 192.168.1.2 (or .3, .4, etc.) in
order to make the initial contact with the Eicon 1550/1551. This is a temporary change.
Once the Eicon 1550/1551 is configured, you can change your computer’s IP settings
back to their original state.

Summary of IP Address Recommendations
on page 31 for more information.
