WHEEL BRAKES AND BEARINGS
Adjusting the brakes
The wheels are turned in the (forward) driving direction and the brakes adjusted from the adjusting
screw on the inner side of the brake unit. Tighten the screw until the brake linings touch the drum
and a slight resistance to rotation can be felt. After this, loosen the adjusting screw about ½ turn so
that the wheel can be turned freely without brake linings rubbing at the drum.
Apply the handbrake forcibly 3-4 times, and after this adjust so that any slack is eliminated.
A correctly adjusted handbrake should start applying some braking force 15 - 20 mm (⅝ - ¾”) after
the handle has passed the dead center point.
Adjusting the brake system too tightly demands stronger forces when reversing.
After the brakes have been adjusted, we recommend that you make a test drive and apply the brakes
2-3 times, checking that they are functioning correctly.
Adjusting the bearings
The wheel bearings are lubricated for life and do not need any service.
(they do not need additional lubrication and they cannot be adjusted).
Service intervals
500 km (300 miles)
Running in
5000 km (3000 miles)
Brake adjustment, lubricate the moving parts in the overrun
device.
13 000 - 15 000 km (8 000 - 9 000 miles) or every 6 month:
a) Check brake linings for wear, and renew if necessary.
b) Check the overrun device.
c) Lubricate the sliding parts of the overrun brake.
The high durability and maintenance-free operation of double row angular contact compact bearings
makes the occurence of bearing breakdowns in extremely rare in normal conditions. If , because of
exceptional operating conditions a bearing failure should occur, it is mandatory to replace the
complete brake drum unit with pressed-in bearings and locking nut.
Warning!
Service work should be done by a trained service repair shop.
The wheels should be turned at least once every 3 months, so that the lubricating film on the
bearings does not crack.
