Idle Shutdown Timer
This feature is an optional, predetermined timed idle shutdown system. Its purpose
is to conserve fuel by eliminating excessive idling and allowing a turbocharger
cool-down period. The idle shutdown timer activates when the transmission is in
neutral with the vehicle parking brakes set and the engine is at idle or in fast-idle
mode.
California Engine Idle Limiting
For California (50-state) EPA certification engines that idle above 900 rpm, the
California Engine Idle Limiting feature is enabled. The engine will generally shut
down after five minutes of continuous idling when the transmission is in neutral or
park and the parking brake is set or after 15 minutes when the transmission is in
neutral or park and the parking brake is not set. The automatic shutdown feature
that is applied above 900 rpm is required for all California certified engines with
the exception of engines used in specific vehicle types which the state of California
has determined to be exempt from the idle shutdown requirement.
Non-California (49-state) EPA certification engines have the automatic shutdown
feature enabled.
In California and Opt-in states, extended idling above 900 rpm is not allowed
unless the engine is performing a parked DPF regeneration or engaged in PTO
operations such as pumping, hydraulics, etc.
