Dell Force10 MXL
Cisco vPC or Virtual PortChannel is a feature that will allow a device (in this case the MXL switch) to
use a single portchannel/LAG to connect to two different Cisco Nexus 5000 Series switches but have
both Cisco switches appear as a single switch (Cisco Systems, Inc., 2009). One of the key benefits to
this feature and configuration is that all of the uplinks to the Cisco Nexus switches will be forwarding
and will not be impacted by spanning tree (Cisco Systems, Inc., 2010). Additionally the downstream
switches (MXL) will not need any special configuration beyond a regular LAG/PortChannel to take
advantage of this feature on the Cisco switch.
The following scenarios will step through setting up the vPC configuration and then adding FCoE to the
configuration. The naming conventions for the two Cisco Nexus 5000 Series Switches will be Nex5K-1
for the first switch and Nex5K-2 for the second. The Dell Force10 MXL switches are named similarly.
MXL-1, and MXL-2.
