Flash Drives
The TouchStar contains 2MB of Flash memory configured as a
solid-state drive. The on-board flash array is supported as a
bootable, read-writable drive using the True Flash File System
(TFFS). TFFS requires two software components that are either
installed in the System BIOS device, or at the start of the Flash
Array. Once these components are installed and the Flash Array
is formatted, the arrays becomes a bootable drive and is acces-
sible as a normal DOS fixed disk (such as drive C:\). Standard
start-up files config.sys and autoexec.bat can be placed on the
TFFS drive to tailor the system configuration and automatically
start application programs. Any standard DOS application
developed and tested on floppy or hard disks can be moved
onto the Flash drive using standard DOS utilities and com-
mands, such as copy, etc.
When initializing or preparing a Flash drive, software compo-
nents can be placed on either the Flash Array or in the BIOS
device. To initialized a Flash drive:
1. Boot from a floppy with the following lines in the
config.sys file
• device = fdass.com
• device = tffs.com
2. Add “fdass.com” and “tffs.com” in the root directory of
the diskette and format.com, fdass4m.bin.
As the system boots, the sign-on messages will be displayed.
When the system completes booting:
3. Run format c: /s:fdass4m.bin.
This runs the low-level format and transfers the boot image to
the start of the FLASH Array.
4. Edit the config.sys file to remove the TFFS drivers.
