2.3 Battery Management System (BMS)
The Battery Management System integrated in each LiFePO4 battery monitors and protects the
battery from damage due to improper handling or incorrect parameters. In addition, the BMS
performs an active internal cell balancing to always maintain maximum performance.
In detail, the tasks of the BMS are:
•
Protection against overload due to excessive charging current or excessive discharging current
•
Protection against excessive charging voltage or overvoltage
•
Protection against too low a discharge
•
Protection against overtemperature
•
Protection against short circuit
•
Automatic cell balancing (equalisation of the individual cells in the battery to be at the same
charge level)
If one of the aforementioned protective devices causes the cells to be switched off and thus
disconnected from the terminals, no voltage can be measured at the pole connections. If the reason
for the disconnection no longer occurs, the battery switches on again automatically. Switching on
again after protection against too deep a discharge can take up to several hours.
