Your BT Freelance 501 answering
machine uses voice prompts to guide
you simply through its operation.
You can operate your answering
machine from:
• the base
• the handset
• remotely, from any other Touchtone
™
telephone,
see page 29.
Switching the answering machine
on/off
1. Press
. The machine announces
“Answer on”
followed by the current
outgoing message, or
“Answer off”
.
The Answer On/Off indicator on the
handset display comes on when the
answering machine is switched on.
When set to Answer On your BT
Freelance 501 will answer calls after
the number of rings selected in the
answer delay setting and play the
selected OGM (outgoing message) to
your callers.

The answering machine
is pre-set to ON, so it’s
ready to record messages
as soon as the base is
plugged in.
(Remember to charge
the handset for at least
24 hours first).
Set the day and time
You will need to set the
day and time so that the
correct day and time is
added to messages you
receive.
Follow the instructions in
‘Phone Settings’
on page
21 to set the date and
time. To set the day, see
page 26. If you subscribe
to a Caller Display
service, the first call
received by your product
will set the date and
time, but you will need
to set the day yourself.
