NOTICE:
The TBI engine is designed to work with the electronics in your vehicle. Adding electrical parts or
accessories may affect the operation of the fuel injection system. Contact your dealer before adding such
equipment, as it may result in engine performance problems.
GASOLINE ENGINE WARM UP
Always let the engine idle for 20 to 30 seconds after starting and drive at moderate speed for several
miles, especially during cold weather. Do not operate a cold engine at high rpm.
Even though the engine may be equipped with a water jacket type heater, it is essential that the engine be
run for a short period of time before placing the engine under load.
NOTICE:
Do not leave your vehicle unattended with the engine running. If the engine should overheat, you
would not be there to react to the temperature warning light or gage. This could result in costly damage to
your vehicle and its contents.
GASOLINE ENGINE RE-START WITH VEHICLE MOVING (AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION)
If you have to restart the engine with the vehicle moving, place the shift lever in “N” (Neutral) first. A
starter safety switch is designed to prevent starter operation while the transmission shift lever is in any drive
position.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER (TBI ENGINE VEHICLES)
The catalytic converter on your vehicle is an emission control device added to the exhaust system to
reduce exhaust gas pollutants. The converter contains a ceramic material coated with noble metal catalysts.
To prevent contamination and loss of effectiveness of the catalysts, unleaded fuel must be used. Unleaded
fuel also reduces spark plug fouling, exhaust system corrosion and engine oil deterioration. Leaded fuel will
also damage the oxygen sensor in the Computer Command Control system which could affect emission
control.
The following precautions should be taken with catalytic converter equipped buses.
•
DO NOT USE LEADED FUEL.
•
Avoid motoring an engine with the ignition off or cranking more than 30 seconds after engine first
fires.
•
Avoid prolonged operation with a misfiring or flooded engine.
•
Avoid pushing or towing to start manual transmission equipped buses.
CAUTION: Care should be taken on wash racks, hoists and when loading converter buses for shipment
because of the converter location behind muffler.
WARNING: Do not park your vehicles over combustible materials, such as grass or leaves, which can
come into contact with the hot exhaust system and cause such materials to ignite under certain wind and
weather conditions.
EXHAUST SYSTEM (GASOLINE ENGINES ONLY)
Buses meeting Federal Emissions Regulations have an exhaust system made of special materials to with-
stand higher exhaust system temperatures.
CAUTION: To help avoid fire, use only Blue Bird or equivalent heat shields and exhaust system parts. Do
not operate engine without heat shields installed. These vehicles must not be parked over combustible
materials, such as grass or leaves, as contact with a hot exhaust system may cause such materials to ignite
under certain conditions.
