CHAPTER 6: Planning and Installing an Expanded System (Optional)
55
For systems that (a) will have to reach more than sixty computers or (b) can’t be efficiently laid out in a straight
line but will be operating across computer-to-console distances greater than 250 feet (76.2 m), we recommend a
combination star/daisychain configuration, as shown in Figure 6-4. This combination is usually the most
flexible way to manage large numbers of computers, especially if you will be frequently adding, moving, or
removing them.
Figure 6-4. A hybrid expanded configuration.
As you configure your own system, keep the following considerations in mind:
1. The maximum cabling distance between any user and any accessible computer in the system is 500 feet
(152.4 m). If this maximum distance is exceeded, video quality will be severely degraded.
2. The maximum number of ServSwitch Multis between any user and any accessible computer is four,
including the Switches attached to the user’s console and the computer. If a user attempts to switch to a
computer more than four Switches away (that is, a computer that would have to send its video signal
through more than four Switches to reach the user), the command will be ignored; the system will remain
on the current channel until the user selects a closer channel.
