For "hot restarts" you may not need to choke the engine. Check that the fuel line is full of gas
without any bubbles and smartly pull the starter rope. If the engine doesn't start after a few pulls,
then manually choke the engine as above and slowly pull the starter rope until you can feel fuel
wetting your thumb or finger before removing it from the carb venturi. Slowly pull the starter
one more time to check the engine is clear, and then pull smartly until the engine starts.
Never run the engine with the boat on its stand for more than a minute or so without water
circulating through the cooling system. This is long enough to start the engine and to check the
idle as above, or when preparing to launch the boat in the water. To run the engine for longer
with the boat on its stand, you need to arrange a supply of water. One way to do this is to make
or adapt a fitting for your garden hose with two nipples or outlets over which you can slide the
water lines from the rudder and transom pickup. Simply remove the lines from those fittings,
connect them to your garden hose adapter and turn on the hose at low pressure so that water
flows freely through the outlets on your boat. Be careful to keep the lines and hose away from
your prop although you should keep the engine revs low enough not to actuate the clutch as
much as possible.
For more information on the engine breakin procedure, carburetor setting, performance tips and
engine maintenance, please read the separate XP254M engine manual that comes with this boat.
Step 12: Stopping The Engine
For safety purpose, your boat comes equipped with a kill
switch that will instantly stop the engine. Simply press the
button and hold it momentarily until the engine stops.
However, you should also set your throttle linkage so that
you can stop the engine by pushing the transmitter trigger.
Note: When bringing your boat back to the shore after each run, judge the distance
correctly and push the transmitter trigger to stop the engine so that the boat glides
safely to a stop before hitting the shore.
Note: Before running for the first time each day, check that your "Fail Safe" stops the
engine correctly. With the boat on its field stand and the engine running at idle, turn
off your transmitter. The Fail Safe should immediately close the throttle and stop the
engine. Your radio or Fail Safe device will have instructions on how to set this up.
Step 13: Launching And Running Your Boat
* Before the first run each day:
a) Carefully check over the boat as explained in previous steps to ensure nothing is loose and that
all the cooling lines are correctly attached.
