Troubleshooting
Engine will not start
1. Spark plug wire disconnected
2. Throttle control in wrong position
3. Throttle cable casing improperly adjusted
1. Connect spark plug wire to spark plug
2. Throttle must be positioned at choke for a
cold start, or at warm start if already warm
(see page 20 for instructions)
3. See page 12 to check and adjust throttle
cable casing
Engine runs rough, floods during operation
1. Dirty air cleaner
1. Clean or replace air cleaner
Engine is hard to start
1. Throttle cable casing improperly adjusted
2. Stale fuel
3. Spark plug wire lose
4. Shift lever rod in
forward
1. See page 12 to check and adjust throttle
cable casing
2. Drain old fuel and replace with fresh. Use
gas stabilizer at end of season
3. Make sure spark plug wire is securely
attached to spark plug
4. Shift lever rod must be in
neutral
to start
the engine
Engine misses or lacks power
1. Engine overload--drag stake is set too high
(that is, the tilling depth is too deep)
2. Clogged fuel tank
3. Clogged air cleaner
4. Improper carburetor adjustment
5. Spark plug dirty, improper gap, or wrong
type
6. Oil in gasoline
1. Raise the tines for shallower tilling by
lowering the drag stake, see page 17
2. Remove and clean fuel tank
3. Clean or replace air cleaner
4. Take to authorized Briggs & Stratton
service center
5. Replace spark plug and adjust gap
6. Drain and refill gas tank and carburetor
Engine will not stop when throttle control is
positioned at
stop
1. The throttle cable casing may need
adjustment

Tiller moves forward during starting
1. Shift lever rod in

Tiller is difficult to control when tilling
(machine jumps or lurches forward)
1. Wheels not engaged in tilling position
2. Drag stake is set too high (that is, the tilling
depth is too deep)

lowering the drag stake, see page 17
Tines turn, wheels do not turn
1. Wheels not engaged in tilling position
2. Internal transmission failure
1. Lock wheels in tilling position, see page 15
