WANGUARD 5.2 User Manual & Administrator's Guide
Sniffing Sensor Configuration
In switched networks only the trafc for a specifc device is sent to the device's network card. If the Sensor
system is not deployed in the main data-path then a network TAP, or a switch or router that ofers a "monitoring
port" must be used. In this case, the network device sends a copy of data packets traveling through a port or VLAN
to the monitoring port. The Snifng Sensor
inspects every packet it receives to do the trafc analysis.
For confguring Cisco switches please consult Catalyst Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) Confguraton Example
on
htp://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/41.html
. To confgure TAPs or other devices that support port mirroring,
please consult the producer's documentaton.
The Snifng Sensor Confguraton window contains the following felds:
●
Sensor Name
A short name to help you identfy the Snifng Sensor.
●
Interface Group
Optonal descripton used within the Console to group multple interfaces by locaton, roles etc.
●
Graph Color
The color used in graphs for this Sensor. The default color is a random one, but you can change it. To
change the color you can enter the color as a HTML Color Code or you can manually select the color by
clicking the drop-down menu.
●
Sensor Type
If the license key permits it, you can change the type of the Sensor.
●
Sensor Server
The Server running the Sensor. To add a new one go to Confguraton » Servers » Add Server.
●
Snifng Interface
The network interface that receives the trafc. The Linux network interface naming conventon: eth0 for
the frst ethernet interface, eth1.900 for the second ethernet interface with 802.1Q VLAN 900 and so
on.
If the Snifng Sensor server is deployed in-line then it must contain the network interface that receives
the trafc towards your network.
●
Link Speed IN / OUT
The speed of the monitored link. If set, it is used to generate Reports based on usage percent.
●
IP Zone
The Sensor must use an IP Zone to learn about your network and to extract per-subnet setngs.
For more informaton about IP Zones please consult IP Zones Setup chapter on page 40.
