The Manta is a semi scale model of a vintage hydroplane in 1:8 scale which captures the elegant lines of an Italian
original from 1953. The full scale original was powered by a Ferrari 12 cylinder V-type engine with a capacity of 4.5
liters.
The original hydroplane weighed approximately 800 kg and reached a top speed of about 178 mph (330 km/h). The
boat was constructed mainly from mahogany.
Display Stand
Cut out parts 1, 2, 4 and 5 and sand off the black residue
produced by laser cutting. Round off parts 1 and 2 where the
hull will later rest on the stand. Reinforce parts 4 by gluing
5×5 mm spruce strips to the inside of parts 4.
Assemble the stand, secure with parts 5 and glue. When glue
has dried completely apply two coats of primer, then apply
clear varnish.

Mahogany Deck
The deck is made from 1 mm mahogany veneer with cotton fabric on the underside for extra strength. The thickness of 1 mm allows the veneer
to be sanded down along the contact surfaces for a smooth finish.
Also, should the veneer brake along the grain during handling, the fabric on the back will hold the veneer together. Small cracks will become
invisible after sanding and varnishing.
Apply two to three coats of primer to the mahogany parts.
Cut out part 6 and test fit around coaming. Slightly chamfer the contact surfaces until a snug fit is achieved. With a soft pencil mark exact
position of part 6 on GRP hull.
Apply 20 min. epoxy glue to underside of deck 6, precisely position part on hull and secure with tape and clamps until glue has cured.
As an option, the kit includes additional laser cut mahogany fairings which may be fitted around the coaming.
While glue sets make sure, the mahogany deck fits the hull
perfectly. Where necessary, gently press down the deck with your
fingers, but be careful not to produce dents in the upper surface of
the hull.
Immediately remove any excess glue from the hull using
methylated spirits for proper results!
Carefully sand off traces of laser cutting from parts 7 and fit parts
to hull. Apply epoxy glue and secure parts with tape and clamps.
Hold down with your fingers where necessary to ensure proper
contact with hull. Finally add parts 8 in the same manner.
When glue has cured completely check joints and fill with 5
minute epoxy if required. Carefully sand joints in mahogany deck
and sand outline flush with GRP hull.
Apply two or three coats of thinned down clear varnish to the
mahogany deck (lightly sand surface between coats).
