What Is An Icon?
Icons are pictures that represent files and programs stored in the computer's hard
drive. When a file or program appears as an icon, it is said to be in a "minimized"
state.
What Is A Window?
A window is a work area contained inside a frame. When you double-click an icon
with the trackball pointer, you will open a window. Other icons may be displayed
inside the window. When a file, directory, or program appears as a window, it is said
to be in a "maximized" state.
Using the desktop is very different from using a non-graphical interface such as DOS.
Instead of relying on screen prompts and typed commands, SCO-UNIX uses a simple
point-and-click operating method similar to Windows and Macintosh computers. This
makes SCO-UNIX much easier to use than a standard UNIX system.
To learn more about using SCO-UNIX's desktop, read the brief tutorial below.
How To Start An Application
To start an application, first select its icon with the pointer. Move the pointer to the
application's icon and click the leftmost trackball button once. The icon's title should
become highlighted to let you know that it has been selected.
Now, quickly click the leftmost trackball button twice. This is called "double-
clicking". The pointer changes shape. This means that the computer is opening
the icon. Do not double-click the icon again if the pointer has already changed
shape. This may cause two identical windows to be opened.
