Overview
This chapter describes the VPN (virtual private network) tunnelling and
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) commands accessible from the CLI of the
OfficeConnect Gateway.
VPNs allow remote workers and mobile users to communicate securely and
transparently with a corporate (private) network. With VPN enabled, secure
Internet tunnels are established between the remote PCs or workstations and the
private network.
A virtual private network is a group of two or more computer systems, typically
connected to a private network (a network built and maintained by an
organization solely for its own use) with limited public-network access, that
communicates "securely" over a public network. VPNs may exist between an
individual machine and a private network (client-to-server) or a remote LAN and a
private network (server-to-server). Security features differ from product to product,
but most security experts agree that VPNs include encryption, strong
authentication of remote users or hosts, and mechanisms for hiding or masking
information about the private network topology from potential attackers on the
public network.
A VPN tunnel functions as a 'virtual leased line' between two VPN devices through
a public network (such as the Internet). These tunnels are protected by strong
encryption and authentication mechanisms. For the minimal expense of simple
Internet connections, VPN tunnels offer the security of a private network.
Point-to-Point-Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) is a networking technology that supports
multiprotocol virtual private networks (VPN). PPTP enables remote users to access
corporate networks securely and to dial into a local Internet service provider to
connect securely to their corporate network through the Internet.
The following tables identifies the Tunneling commands that are described in this
chapter:
