Configuring TCP/IP for the Macintosh

Beginning with Macintosh Operating System 7, TCP/IP is already installed on the Macintosh. On each
networked Macintosh, you will need to configure TCP/IP to use DHCP by following these steps:

1.

From the Apple menus, select

Control

Panels

, then

TCP/IP

. The TCP/IP Control Panel opens:

From the “Connect Via” box, select your Macintosh’s Ethernet interface.

From the “Configure” box, select

Using DHCP Server

. You can leave the DHCP Client ID box

empty.

4.

Close the TCP/IP Control Panel.

Repeat this for each Macintosh on your network.

Verifing TCP/IP Properties for the Macintosh

After your Macintosh is configured and has restarted, you can check the TCP/IP configuration by returning
to the TCP/IP Control Panel. From the Apple menu, select

Control

Panels

, then

TCP/IP

.

The panel is updated to show your settings, which should match the values below if you are using the
default TCP/IP settings:

•

The IP Address is between 192.168.0.33 and 192.168.0.64

•

The Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

•

The Router address is 192.168.1.1 (the Prestige)

If you do not see these values, you may need to restart your Macintosh or you may need to switch the
“Configure” setting to a different option, then back again to “Using DHCP Server”.

Your Internet Account

If you want Internet Access, you need to contact an ISP (Internet Service Provider) for an Internet access
account. For a single user account, the ISP supplies you with TCP/IP configuration information. Typically,
this information is dynamically (automatically) assigned via DHCP but in most cases you will need to enter
at least some information manually.
