Q
CMOS sensors? what's that? And why would I want it?
A
CMOS sensor technology promises a better quality image at lower prices in the near future.
The images will be clearer due to improved image capture (or less image "noise"), and the costs
will come down based on new manufacturing techniques, circuit design, and lenses. So you'll
get more for less.
Q
Everyone talks about the resolution of a digital video camera. What is resolution?
A
Resolution determines how sharp and clear the picture is on your computer screen. Technically
speaking, it's a measure of pixels and lines, width by height. In desktop videoconferencing, 2
common measurements are: CIF (common intermediate format) displays 352 pixels per line
and 288 lines per picture and QCIF is 176x144.
Q
Why are Frames Per Second (FPS) important?
A
Because it determines how "life-like" the video is on your computer screen. Frames per second
is the number of individual images that you see on the screen per second. Thirty frames viewed
in one second is "real time video," and is like watching a show on your TV set. In desktop
videoconferencing, 5-10 fps is considered to be acceptable for viewing.
