Control Room Module (L8- CR)
This is the console operator’s monitor that allows the
operator to listen to the console’s four stereo outputs and
an external stereo line level input. This module includes the
FUNCTION encoder and TAKE button, the PAN, MODE,
and EVNT buttons, the CR/HDPN bank of source select
switches, the SPLIT CUE switch, and CONTROL RM and
HDPN level controls for the control room and headphone
outputs, along with a pair of OLED displays.
In a typical radio application the control surface is lo‑
cated in the Control Room. Speakers in the Control Room
allow the control surface’s operator to listen to the con‑
trol surface bus outputs to be assured that the surface is
performing as desired. These speakers are fed by a stereo
signal from the control surface’s Control Room output. In
addition to the monitor output, the operator may also desire
to listen to specific isolated faders via the cue system and
an external cue speaker, or may want to listen via headphones. Thus, the
control room monitor consists of the above mentioned level controls, along
with four source select (PGM, AUD, AUX and UTIL) buttons, as well as
a programmable EXT/SET button. In some instances the control surface
operator may also be performing talent whose voice will be heard over the
radio. The operator’s microphone may thus provide a part of the signal that
is going out over the air. If that signal is the one being monitored with the
Control Room speakers, there is the potential for feedback. The amplified
signal from the Control Room speakers is picked up by the microphone and
amplified to a new, higher, level, which then is once again picked up by the
microphone. The signal quickly rises to an ear‑splitting screech. To prevent
this, the operator’s microphone is normally set to MUTE the Control Room
output to prevent the occurrence of feedback.
Displays
The L8‑CR module houses two OLED INFO displays. The information
shown in these displays changes in accordance with function in use, and
will be described with each control function. We will be referring to these
displays as the top display and the bottom display.
FUNCTION Knob
The FUNCTION knob serves several functions: as a Source signal
selector for fader strips, as a Pan control, as a Mode selector, and as an Event
recall control. This knob can also be used to cycle through the system and
control surface information.
PAN Control
Press and hold the input channel A/B/SET button until it begins to flash,
then press the PAN button. When the PAN button is pressed the FUNCTION
knob acts as a panpot in MONO, LEFT only, and RIGHT only modes, and
