3.6.3 Media Redundancy Protocol (MRP)
MRP (IEC standard 62439-2) provides fast communication recovery in ring-based network
topologies and is supported by several Industrial Ethernet switches of the market. Therefore, it is a
good alternative to build rings of different branded switches. An MRP ring can support up to 50
devices and will enable a back-up link in 200 ms.
MRP in Weidmüller Ethernet Switches
In MRP only the role MRC/Client is supported.
It needs to be considered that this redundancy protocol can be configured and applied as
independent instances either via Web Interface or - if Industrial protocol PROFINET is activated -
via a PROFINET engineering tool (like TIA Portal). Only one MRP-Client instance may run at a
time.
By factory default settings Industrial protocol PROFINET is activated having the PROFINET MRP
instance enabled using ports 1 and 2. All other redundancy protocols (including Web-based MRP
instance) are disabled by default.
As long the PROFINET MRP instance is activated do not enable Web-Interface based MRP
redundancy generally.
If Web-Interface based MRP redundancy shall be used either disable PROFINET generally (Menu
Basic Settings --> Industrial Protocols, disables also PROFINET MRP) or disable PROFINET MRP
redundancy explicitly via a PROFINET engineering tool.
If one of the other redundancy protocols O-Ring, O-Chain, MSTP/RSTP/STP or Fast Recovery shall
be used as long PROFINET MRP is enabled, the selected PROFINET MRP ports may not be used.
For checking or re-configuring current PROFINET MRP settings you need to use a PROFINET
engineering tool like TIA Portal.
