Calorifier WH40A

Introduction

The tap water in the calorifier tank is heated by means of engine
oil which is pumped through the heating spiral.

Use

Proceed as follows before using the calorifier for the first time:
• Clean the inside of the tank by rinsing with clean tap water.
• Also clean the inside of the heating spiral; rinse it through

with a small quantity of engine oil.

• Open the stop cock in the tap water pipe between pump and

tank. Open the hot water tap so that air in the tank is released
and fill the tank with water.

• Start the engine. The heating spiral and supply and return

pipes will now fill with oil.

• Check all connections, pipes and fittings for leaks.

CAUTION

Stop the engine immediately if any leaks occur. Repair the
leak before starting the engine again.

• Stop the engine and check the oil level; top up if necessary.

WARNING

The hot tap water can be very hot indeed, temperatures in
excess of 95˚C (203˚F) are possible.
For safe use, mix with copious amount of cold water.

WARNING

Close one of the stop cocks in the oil pipe between engine
and calorifier if engine oil temperature exceeds 100˚C
(212˚F) for a long period. This will prevent water boiling in
the tank.

The engine oil temperature is shown on the engine control
panel.

Electrical Heating

When fitted, an electric heating element can be used to heat up
or maintain water temperature when the engine is not in use.
It will take a lot longer to heat tap water in the calorifier with an
electric element than with using the engine oil system.

For Your Information

The amount of heat created by a combustion engine,
and thus available to heat the calorifier, is about the same
as the power output. So an engine which generates 50
kW at the flywheel will provide about 50 kW heat! An
electric heating element is only 0.5 or 1 kW.

WARNING

NEVER switch on the electric heating element if the calori-
fier is not full of water.

Preparation for Winter

The water should always be drained from the calorifier. To do
this, remove the hose connections C and D and both plugs in
the non-return valve (E). Open the water taps so that the pipes
and calorifier tank drain completely.

The heating spiral does not require draining.

Installation

General

First study the mounting drawings and the piping diagram, see
drawings on pages 14 - 17.

Fittings

On the tap water side of the calorifier, use only fittings made of
a corrosion-resistant material (stainless steel or brass).

WARNING

Never use steel or iron fittings!

Fit a non-return valve (8) to the tap water inlet and a pressure
valve (6) to the tap water outlet.

Pressure Relief Valve

The pressure relief valve must be set at 4 bar (4 kgf/cm

2

, 56 psi).

As the water heats up, the pressure valve will operate; water
drips and a little water wastage is normal.
If you do not want this water to leak out freely, connect an non-
pressurized drainage pipe to the valve outlet.

When assembling, use a good quality, removable screw thread
sealant on all fittings. Disassembly may be necessary for main-
tenance, or draining; when preparing for winter, for example!
