Backup Restore Process
iSTAR eX starts the backup-reboot-restore process by telling the PMB to cut
power to all peripherals. Then, iSTAR eX terminates all processes.
The older copy of data on the Compact Flash card is selected, deleted, and
then re-written with the current configuration and state data. iSTAR eX waits
for the PMB to report that the AC fail input has deactivated. Either main
power will return and the PMB decide that backup now is inactive, or the
battery will run out and the board stop.
Preventing Restarts without Power
When iSTAR eX boots and/or reboots, it checks the state of the backup now
signal reported by the PMB. If backup now is active, iSTAR eX assumes that
there is not enough power to run and waits for backup now to deactivate.
When backup now deactivates, iSTAR eX will boot normally. If the PMB is not
present or backup now is inactive on startup, iSTAR eX will also boot
normally.
Restore
After booting, iSTAR eX checks the state of its Real Time Clock. If the Real
Time Clock has been reset, iSTAR eX assumes that it does not know what time
it is and will not restore any data.
Assuming the Real Time Clock has not been reset, iSTAR eX selects the newer
of its two backups and restores that data from Compact Flash to RAM.

For a state backup, iSTAR eX restores state and configuration data, then
modifies the backup type value in Compact Flash to “config”. This
ensures that the state backup is not restored twice.

For a configuration backup, iSTAR eX restores only configuration data.
iSTAR eX waits until all processes have started before telling the PMB to
re-enable power to peripherals.
When power to peripherals is delayed for a longer time, the battery can
recharge more and have enough power for another backup if power
should be lost again.
