Checking the hiking direction
When hiking the compass can
keep you on the right course.
The hiking route begins e.g. at
Point A and ends at Point E, as
shown in the illustration.
Before the hike mark on your
map the points at which the
direction of the route changes re-
cognisably or the route branches
off as shown here at the points
A, B, C and D.
Now determine the bearing of
Point B, seen from Point A (315°),
Point C from Point B (0°), Point
D from Point C (225°) and then
Point E, seen from Point D (315°).
Write the bearings of all seg-
ments on your map.
During the hike you can now
use your compass to check
the hiking direction segment by
segment using the previously
determined bearings.
