C H A R G I N G S Y S T E M - Alternator

R ectifier

Good o r defective rectifier is classi

fied by the resistance value between

the  rectifier  holder  and  the  rectifier
le a d .
T o   p erform   this  test,  the  rectifier
holder  must  be  separated  from   the
stato r .

R e f e r to paragraph 2 of the Stator

Inspection & R e p a ir on page 8-11,

1. Rectifier holder positive side.

Connect the tester ( + ) lead onto

the re ctifier holder and the ( - )
lead

onto the re ctifier lead as

shown in figure 8-21, and check

the resistance.

Good re ctifier will indicate no r e

sistance,  and  if  it  indicates a high
re sista n ce,  the  rectifier is opened.
N e x t,  turn the polarity  of the tester

and check again. If the tester n ee

dle m oves in either p ola rity, the

re c tifier is shorted. If the needle

d oes not move in either p o ra lity,
the re c tifie r is opened, and should

be rep la ced .

If any one of the positive side r e c

tifiers is found defective, alw ays

re p la c e the positive side rectifiers

with the holder assem bly.

2. R ectifier holder negative side.

Connect the tester ( - ) lead onto

the re ctifie r holder and ( + ) lead

onto the rectifier lead as shown

in figure 8-22, and check the r e
sistance .

Good re c tifie r will indicate no r e

sistance, and if it indicates high
resistance, the rectifier is opened.
Next,turn the polarity of the tester,

and  check  again.  If  the  needle  of
the  tester moves in  either polarity,
the  rectifier  is  shorted.

If the needle does not move in ei

ther polarity, the rectifier is open

ed , and should be replaced.

If any one of the negative side

rectifiers is found defective, al

w a y s replace the negative side

rectifiers with the holder assem

bly .
