Checking and Adjusting the
Alternator Belt
Service Interval:
After the first 50 hours—Check and
adjust the alternator belt.
Every 250 hours—Check and adjust the
alternator belt.
1.
Press the belt inward using your finger or a ruler
with a force of approximately 98 N (22 lbf) to
check the deflection.
There are 3 positions to check the belt tension
(
). The correct deflection at each
position is as follows:
•
Position 1—
9 to 13 mm (5/16 to 1/2 inch)
•
Position 2—
7 to 10 mm (1/4 to 3/8 inch)
•
Position 3—
10 to 14 mm (3/8 to 1/2 inch)

If needed, adjust the belt tension as follows:

Loosen the adjusting bolts and nuts, then move
the alternation using a wrench to tighten the belt
to the correct tension (
).

Tighten the adjusting bolts and nuts (

Tighten the belt to the correct tension.
Ensure that there is clearance between the belt
and the bottom of the pulley groove. If there is
no clearance between the belt and the bottom of
the pulley groove, replace the belt (

Check the belt for cracks, oil, and/or wear.
Replace, if necessary.
