Chapter 4
7) Connect the NanoTrak and the Piezo units to the power supply - see Section
8) Connect the PSU to the main supply and switch ‘ON’. The version number of the
embedded software is displayed on each Piezo unit during boot up. The software
version is useful when requesting technical support.
4.3.2
Basic Operation
The general procedure involves setting the NanoTrak to ‘Latch’ (to lock the piezo
positions - see Section 4.2.1.) and using the manual actuators to adjust the stage
position until some power is detected. Once this initial ‘first light’ position is achieved
the NanoTrak is switched to ‘Track’ and the unit controls the piezo drivers which move
the stage to locate the position of maximum power.
1) Press the LATCH/TRACK button on the NanoTrak control panel to select ‘Latch’
mode, i.e. the LATCH LED is lit.
2) Using the manual X-axis actuator, position the stage such tha t the input and
output fibers are spaced well apart, with zero power transmission between them.
(Alternatively, switch off or obscure the optical power source). Make a note of the
readings shown on the RANGE and SIGNAL bars. Since the optical source has
been removed, these readings show the level of background noise present.
3) Use the manual X-axis actuator to bring the fiber tips close together.
4) Adjust the manual Y- and Z-axis actuators to visually align the fibers when viewed
from the side and above.
5) Carefully adjust the manual Y- and Z-axis actuators while observing the range and
signal bars. Continue to adjust the actuators in the direction of increasing power
as shown by rising range numbers and/or a lengthening power bar.
Caution
During item (7) ensure the power supply unit is isolated from the mains
before connecting to the T-Cube units. Always power up the units by
connecting their power supply to the mains. DO NOT connect the T-Cube
units to a 'live' external power supply. Doing so (i.e. “hot plugging”)
carries the risk of PERMANENT damage to the unit. Similarly, to power
down the unit, disconnect the power supply from the mains before
disconnecting the T-Cube.
Note
To simplify power supply connections, the T-cube units may be fitted to
a TCH002 controller hub - see Section 3.3.4. Revision 2 piezo units can
also use the hub for communications, negating the need for external
wiring. This requires certain parameters to be set in software - see
