OPERATING  INSTRUCTIONS

FEATU R ES

The Tektronix 7844/R7844  Dual-Beam Oscilloscope  i s  a
solid-state, wide bandwidth, dual-beam osc i l l oscope.  The

instrument accepts Tektronix 70aO-Series plug-in u n its to

form a complete measurement system.  The flex i b i l i ty  of

t h e  plug-in feature and  variety of plug-in units available

a l l ow the system to be used for many measurement applica

tions.

The 7844/R7844 provides separate vertical and horizontal

deflection systems,  FOCUS,  I NTE NSITY, and B EAM F I N D

E R  functions for each beam.  T h e  plug-in u n it i n  either

vertical compartment can be sel ected to provide vertical de

flection for either beam.  The plug-in units in  either horizon
tal compartment may be selected to provide horizontal  de

flection for either beam.

The 7844/R7844 features regulated de power supplies to

ensure that the performance is not affected by variations in

l i n e  voltage and frequency, or by changes in load due to vary

ing power requi rements of the plug-in units.  The 7844/R7844

operates from a  1 1 5  volt or 230 volt  (50  H z  to 400 H z )

nominal l ine source.

Other features i nclude a  dual-gun full-overlap crt with  a

graticule area of 8 x  1 0  centimeters.  The  instrument also
provides a crt display of alphanumeric information encoded

by the plug-in  u nits_  The R EADOUT display i n dicates plug
i n  u n it status such as deflection factor, sweep rate, and other
p l u g- i n  dependent parameters.

The Option 21  instrument is  basically the same as the stan
dard  7844/R7844 except that the vertical  deflection system

is ded icated.  The amplifier unit in the  L E FT V E RT compart

ment controls the vertica! deflection of beam  1  and  the am
p l i fier unit in  the  R I GHT V E R T  compartment controls the

vertical deflection of beam 2,  The V E RTICAL M O D E  switch

and  V E RT SEP control  have been deleted,  Refer to the

Options section for details.

P R E L I M INARY OPE RATION

To effectively operate this instrument, the user must be

come familiar with the operation and capabilities of the  in
strument.  This section describes how to use the front and

rear-pane! controls and connectors.

REV. C JAN

1977

Safety I n formation

This instruction  manual  contains warning information  which

the user must follow to  ensure safe operation of the instru

ment.  Warning  information  is intended to protect the opera

tor and Caution information  is  intended  to protect the

instrument.

This  instrument is  in tended to be operated from

a single-phase  earth-referenced power source

having  one current-carrying conductor (th e  Neu

tral  Conductor)  near earth  potential.  Operation

from  power sources wh ere both current-carry
in g conductors are live with respect to earth

(such  as  phase-to-phase on a  three-wire system)

is not recommended since only  the  Line Con

ductor has over-current (fuse)  protection  with·
in  the instrument.

This instrument has a  three-wire  power cord

with  a  three-terminal polarized plug for connec

tion  to  the power source and safety-earth.  The

safety-earth  terminal  of the plug is  directly con

nected to the instrument frame.  For electric
shock  protection, insert this  plug  only in a mat

ing outlet with  a safety-earth contact or oth er
wise connect the frame to a safety-earth system.

The color-coding of the cord conductors;s in

accordance with  recognized standards.

Operating Voltage

The 7844/R7844 has a  VOLTAGE SELECTOR  switch  which
allows selection of either a  1 1 5 volt or 230 volt nominal  l ine
voltage source.  When changing the Voltage Selector switch
position, disconnect the  power cord  and  use  a small screw

driver to move the  Voltage Selector switch  to the desired

range.
