6.2. Route search in a passive mode
In passive mode, the route search is performed without use of the trace generator. The source
of the electromagnetic field in this case are the current frequency of 50 Hz in the cables under
mains voltage and 100 Hz in pipelines with cathode protection.
Equipment used: Receiver «AP-014», an electromagnetic sensor «EMD-247», headphones.
The sequence of an operator’s of actions:
1. Insert the two batteries into the battery compartment of the receiver «AP-014», observing
polarity.
2. Connect electromagnetic sensor , headphones to the appropriate receiver sockets.
3. Turn on the power of the receiver.
7. Establish a comfortable headphone volume level using «Headphone Volume Changes
«buttons».
When switching on, the device reverts to the settings used in a previous work - the
level of input gain, volume levels and frequency filtering.
5. Position electromagnetic transducer «EMD-247» precisely over the rout so that it was at the
point of maximum signal strength. To do this, place the
the sensor perpendicular to the desired rout on the distance from it, where is supposed to
search;
4. Select the work «passive» frequency (50 Hz to trace cables under voltage 100 Hz or to
trace the pipeline with cathode protection).
6. Press the «Change receiver sensitivity» buttons to adjust the input level, so its level
filled LED scale as much as possible, but to the last LED flashes.
If while working the whole scale of the LED is full, and the last LED flashes (input
overload occurs), one should reduce sensitivity of the receiver.
If the maximum of the sensitivity scale isn’t filled, and the first LED flashes, it means
that the device cannot recognize the signal at the selected frequency, because its level
is too low or there is no signal.
8. Go along the route by moving the electromagnet sensor across the route in one or the other
way to determine points of maximum signal level. Points of maximum signal level correspond to
the position of communication axis.
