First of all, enter a name for this Ad-hoc connection into the
Network name
field.
This is equivalent to the SSID of a router. You may choose any name – the best is
a short and simple name, as it has no technical relevance.
Under
Security type
, specify whether you want the connection to be open or
encrypted. You should always select the option
WEP
. There is no reason to broad-
cast your data without any further protection. Anybody could obtain access to both
computers and therefore access their hard disks.

As you have chosen
WEP
security you must provide an
Authentication key
or
a
Passphrase
to encrypt the connection. The following settings are available:
•
A 5-character case-sensitive key. You can enter digits and letters.
•
A 13-character case-sensitive key. You can enter digits and letters.
•
A 10-hexadecimal character key (non case-sensitive). You may only use the
characters
0-9
and
A-F
, e.g.
A1B2C3D4E5
.
•
A 26-hexadecimal character key (non case-sensitive). You may only use the
characters
0-9
and
A-F
, e.g.
A1B2C3D4E5A1B2C3D4E5A1B2C3
.
Basically, this is nothing other than the normal 64-bits or 128-bits WEP encryption.
The only difference is that you must enter a password for the first two options that
Windows will convert into a code. For the last two options, you enter the final code
yourself.
In order to keep the connection setup simple, choose either of the first two options.
Enter any password with
exactly 5
or
exactly 13
