System Fans
Four 8-cm blower fans and a specially designed air shroud provide all the cooling
needed for the SuperServer 6123L-8R/6123L-iR. It is very important that the
chassis top cover is properly installed and making a good seal in order for the
cooling air to circulate properly through the chassis and cool the components.
See Figure 6-2.
System Fan Failure
The fans normally run at full rpm. If a fan fails, the ambient air temperature in
the chassis will rise and activate the overheat LED on the control panel. Replace
any failed fan immediately. The hot plug fans will start to function upon connec-
tion to its fan header on the i2DML-8G2/i2DML-iG2 serverboard.
Replacing System Cooling Fans
1.
Removing a fan:
Remove the chassis cover. Press the tabs on the top of the fan housing and
remove the fan and its housing. The system power need not be shut down
since the fans are all hot-swappable on the i2DML-8G2/i2DML-iG2
serverboard.
2.
Installing a new fan:
Replace the failed fan with an identical 8-cm, 12 volt fan (Supermicro part
number: FAN-0070). Position the new fan at its proper place in the chassis
by fitting the fan with its housing onto the fan mounts in the chassis. A
"click" can be heard if the fan (in its housing) is properly installed. If the
system power is on, the hot-swappable fan feature will cause the fan to start
immediately upon being connected to its header on the serverboard.

Control Panel
The control panel (located on the front of the chassis) must be connected to the
JF2 connector on the serverboard to provide you with system status indications.
A ribbon cable has bundled these wires together to simplify the connection.
Connect the cable from JF2 on the serverboard to the appropriate header on the
Control Panel PCB (printed circuit board). Make sure the red wire plugs into pin
1 on both connectors. Pull all excess cabling out of the airflow path.
The control panel LEDs inform you of system status. See "Chapter 3: System
Interface" for details on the LEDs and the control panel buttons. Details on JF2
can be found in "Chapter 5: Advanced Serverboard Setup."
