Installing the volcanic stone, and glowing embers (traditional models) or glass media (contemporary models)
WARNING
• Turn OFF all gas and electricity to the appliance before installing the volcanic stone, embers, and logs.
• Do NOT install the logs until the appliance has been completely installed, the gas line connected and
tested for leaks, and the initial burner operation has been confirmed.
• Use of an unapproved log set in the fireplace will void the warranty and will result in incomplete
combustion, sooting, and poor flame quality.
• Logs get very hot and remain hot for up to one hour after the gas supply is turned OFF. Handle the logs
only when cool.
• This appliance is not designed to burn wood. Any attempt to do so could cause irreparable damage to
appliance and prove hazardous.
• If the logs are not installed according to these instructions, improper combustion could occur. This could
result in the excessive production of soot and/or the colorless, odorless, toxic gas carbon monoxide (CO).
NOTE: Install the firebox liner before placing the stone. Logs can be installed after the volcanic stone.
1. If necessary, remove the glass door (Page 58).
2. In contemporary fireplaces, install glass media in recessed areas between front and rear floors. In 35” fireplaces
use less than one bag. The 40” contemporary models require a full bag. Spread the glass in a thin layer
evenly over the burner. Leave the pilot area open and take care to not allow crushed glass to fall into the pilot
hole. It is important to ensure proper media placement per the manual when installing these units. Verify pilot
flame is not obstructed. Ensure media does not fall through the pilot hole in the floor. See Verifying Appliance
Operation on Page 41.
NOTE: Do not mound the media or pile at rear of burner blocking air holes (see Figure 49).
3. In traditional units, spread the decorative volcanic stone in a pleasing pattern on the firebox floor along the slope
and to the back right and left sides of the burner (Figure 47).
NOTE: Do not place stone on the burner.
4. In traditional units, separate and fluff the glowing embers into pieces approximately the size of a quarter
(Figure 48).

5. In traditional units, position the separated glowing embers over the small holes on the burner surface
(Figure 49). Do NOT cover the large burner slots.
