Due to the different operating conditions, the exact intervals for inspection, maintenance and repair cannot be
determined in advance. Higher clutch loads (e.g. due to torque, switching frequency, ambient temperature, etc.)
require shorter maintenance intervals. Therefore, the clutch should initially be observed for functional safety
(e.g. air gap, temperature, noise generation, etc.) and the maintenance intervals adapted according to this infor-
mation.
The manufacturer of the complete machine is responsible for adapting the service intervals to the actual operat-
ing conditions.
8.4.1
Check the operational profile of the carbon brushes
Depending on the strain, operating conditions and material used, the brushes are subject to wear and tear,
which must be controlled at regular intervals.
In order to minimise the maintenance requirements (wear inspection, brush replacements) and avoid interfer-
ence in the power transmission, the operating behaviour of the brushes is also tested when the maintenance
work is performed.
Check brush sparking

Brush sparking should be reported when the carbon
brushes themselves (heavy wear) and/or the slip ring
(scoring) are damaged. Weak pin point sparking is usu-
ally harmless and is also acceptable in continuous op-
eration. However, if reddish sparks appear, the carbon
material is already being depleted. Immediate correc-
tive action is required if shooting sparks occur.
1. Monitor the carbon brushes (102) and slip rings (4)
when operating the machine.

Potential fire sources for excessive brush sparks are:
• excessive radial displacement of the slip ring in mounted condition
• heavy vibrations of the brush holder due to poor mounting
• brush pressure is too low
• excessive backlash of the carbon brushes in the brush holder
• the slip ring is dirty
• the carbon brush has not been ground-in properly
