Creating an escape plan
l Draw up a ground plan of your house and, if possible, specify two escape routes.
l Explain the meaning of the smoke alarm device above all to children and needy persons and tell them
that in case of an emergency, they have to leave the house/flat as fast as possible and, if necessary,
on their own.
l Regularly discuss and practice the proper behaviour in case of fire (see below) and perform a fire drill
every six months.
l Specify a meeting point at a safe distance from the house. It is essential that all residents keep to this
meeting point!
l Specify a location outside of the house from where you are able to rapidly call the fire brigade!
l Keep always a functioning fire extinguisher readily available and show its proper handling to all residents
living in the house!
Behavior in case of fire
l Don’t panic!
l If necessary, alert the other residents as well.
l Leave the house as fast as possible! Do not waste time by dressing yourself or by taking valuables
with you.
l Open the doors very carefully (they could be hot!). If the doors are already hot, choose another escape
route if possible.
l Hold a cloth (a humid cloth if possible) in front of your mouth and nose.
l Stay as close as possible to the floor and, if necessary, crawl on all fours (smoke and toxic gases tend
to go upward!).
l Call the fire brigade as soon as possible!
l Never return into a burning or smoke-filled house! Proceed immediately to the agreed meeting point!
Installation and mounting
For assuring the minimum coverage of your home, smoke alarm devices have be installed on the escape
routes (hallways/on the stairs) and in every bedroom, for providing additional protection in the living room
and/or rooms equipped with electrical devices (e.g. TV or computer room). It might be necessary to install
several smoke alarm devices in e.g. large rooms (> 60 m²), angled chambers or very long hallways (> 9 m).
If possible, install the smoke alarm device on the
ceiling, in the middle of the room. If this is not
possible, make sure to install the smoke alarm
device at a minimum distance of 50 cm from the
wall and of 60 cm from the corner of the room
(see fig.).
The smoke alarm device should NOT
be installed in
l kitchens (smoke emission when cooking or
baking might lead to a false alarm)
l garages (combustion residues when starting the car might possibly lead to a false alarm)
l humid rooms as for instance bathroom/shower (a humidity above 85 % might lead to a false alarm)
l very cold (below 5 °C) or very warm (above 45° C) rooms
l very dusty/dirty rooms (the sensor chamber can be polluted and clogged by dust/dirt thus hindering
the proper functioning of the sensor). In rooms which are exposed to dust, it is essential that the alarm
signalling device is often vacuum cleaned and checked!
l the immediate proximity of fluorescent tubes, fans, air conditioning units, heating appliances
