6 SETUP AND INSTALLATION
6.6.1 Performing a PICO SCALE firmware update
Firmware updates are files named like "
picoscale-1.0.1__2015-12-01_160436.fw
". The file
must be copied to a USB memory stick, which has to be plugged into one of the
PICO SCALE
USB ports. For reducing problems, the stick should be empty (possibly freshly formatted) before
copying the new
fi rmware to it.
Before starting the update process, the PICO SCALE has to be switched o ff . Hold the pilot laser
button and switch the device on, by pushing the power button. Do not release the pilot laser
button until it starts blinking, which indicates that the device is in the update or recon
fi guration
mode.
NOTICE
I t is important that the update process is NOT I NTERRUPTED by switching o ff
the power supply. Otherwise the device may become unresponsive and must be
sent in for repair!
The update process may take a few minutes (5-15). When it has fi nished, the device will be in its
normal operation mode and the pilot laser button should have stopped blinking.
NOTICE
I n rare cases the update procedure does not fi nish after a few minutes. This
problem may occur when updating
PICO SCALE
Controllers with an installed
fi rmware version older than v1.1. I f the pilot laser button does still blink af-
ter 30 minutes, please switch the device o ff and on. The device will continue its
fi rmware update. During this phase, as described above, it must not be switched
o ff . Now, the update should fi nish after a few minutes.
Some fi rmware updates may also require an update of the programming interface libraries (SDK)
and the software tools for the
PICO SCALE
.
6.6.2 System diagnostics data
The
PICO SCALE
interferometer allows saving system diagnostics data (to a USB stick) for analysis
of problems. To save diagnostics data, start the device and plug in a USB memory stick. Wait until
it has booted and entered the normal operation mode. Hold the pilot laser button until it starts
blinking (this should happen after at most 10 to 15 seconds).
NOTICE
I t is important, that the device is in normal operation mode, before the pilot
laser button is pressed!
