10Base-T
10Base-T specifies a CSMA/CD network with 10 Mbit/s based on TP cables with RJ-45
sockets. The bus is realized in this 802.3 version in a hub. All stations are connected to the
hub via four wire connections. Two wire pairs are used: Receive and Transmit.
10Base-FL
The 10Base-FL standard is a FOIRL extension. 10Base-FL describes all functions used for
data transfer from one MAU (Medium Attachment Unit) to an active star-coupler and for
connections between star-couplers.
10Base-FL signals are not compatible to the specifications provided by the standards
10Base-FP and 10Base-FB.
Bridge
A bridge allows to enlarge a network concerning the number of stations and the length of the
connections.
Collision detection
In a repeater, a separate collision detection is provided for each network interface connected
to it. This allows to recognize collisions in the network segments promptly and to inform all
segments of the collision by means of the jam signal.
CSMA/CD
Access method providing line check and collision detection via a random access method.
For local area networks (LAN), this access method supervises the access to the transmis-
sion medium.
Ethernet connection

FOIRL (Fibre Optic Inter Repeater Link)
Repeater and remote repeater are network components used to enlarge the Ethernet
topology across the limits of a LAN segment. Remote repeater are two repeaters realized
via a link segment as a point to point connection. The optical link segment between the two
parts of the remote repeater comply with the standard FOIRL.
