HDD S.M.A.R.T. Capability
The S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology)
system is a diagnostics technology that monitors and predicts device
performance. S.M.A.R.T. software resides on both the disk drive and
host computer. The disk drive software monitors the internal perfor-
mance of the motors, media, heads, and electronics of the drive. The
host software monitors overall reliability status of the drive. If a device
failure is predicted, the host software, through the Client WORKS
S.M.A.R.T applet, warns user of the impending condition and advises
appropriate action to protect data.
