Even if the protocol can distinguish between the server and client sides, RuggedServer does
not do so. Both sides need to know where on the network a given destination device is. If a
message is received from the network, the destination address must point to the serial port
on the receiving server. If a message is received from the local serial port, the destination
address must point to the IP address of the server where the addressed device is connected.
2.2.3.1. The Concept of Links
A communication link is established between two IP addresses. The addressing is described
below:
• The remote address is the source IP address in a message received over the network, and
also the destination address of a message received from a serial port and transmitted on
the network.
• The local address is the destination IP address in a message received over the network,
and also the source address of a message received from a serial port and transmitted on
the network.
For each link, a statistical record will be available to the user if link statistics collection is
enabled in the protocol configuration.
