Step 3: Inspect Clutches and Drive Belt:
• Check the drive belt for signs of over-heating and abnormal wear. Replace belt if the belt appears to be glazed.
• Inspect and set belt deflection to specification. Inspect clutch offset using the correct Alignment Tool.
• If vehicle mileage is approaching 2,000 miles (3,200 KM), install a new drive belt. Break the belt in properly and re-
test.
• Check drive clutch weights, rollers and bushings. Verify weights are at spec. and rollers / bushings are not worn or
sticking.
NOTICE
Both the Owner’s and Service Manual specify the need to reduce the clutch weight by 2 grams at all elevation
settings when the ambient air temperature approaches 40F (4C).
• Check the condition of the drive clutch spring. If the spring shows signs of fatigue, is bent, or damaged, replace the
spring and re-test vehicle.
NOTICE
Inspection of parts returned from the field have revealed some drive and driven clutches that have been cleaned
using chemicals such as Simple Green. The combination of this type of cleaner and belt dust creates a tacky film that
causes the clutch bushings to stick. For this reason, Polaris only recommends cleaning clutches with compressed air.
If chemicals are used, only use isopropyl alcohol to remove belt deposits from the sheaves.
Never clean a drive belt with anything more than a solution of warm-soapy water and then allow the belt to air dry. If
chemicals have been used to clean the clutches, verify the clutch bushings are not sticking on the stationary shafts. If
you find “tacky” belt residue in or around the bushings, disassemble the clutch and clean thoroughly.
Step 4: Inspect Rear Suspension / Track:
• Verify the rail sliders are not worn excessively or unevenly. Replace as a set if required.
• Inspect bogie / idler wheels for damage. Replace wheel(s) if required.
• Verify track tension and track alignment are set to specification as outlined in the Owner’s and Service Manuals.
NOTICE
Remind customers that track tension and track alignment are two of the most critical but often over-looked
maintenance items on their snowmobile. If the track is too loose, the track will balloon-out in the space between the
driveshaft and the front of the rail beams causing a substantial reduction in vehicle speed and driveline efficiency.
In addition, the use of track studs on a loose track magnifies problems with poor vehicle speed and driveline
efficiency. This is why both the Owner’s and Service Manuals specify the track tension for studded tracks must be
maintained at 1 inch (2.54 cm).
• If the track is studded, verify the studs are installed following the stud manufacturer’s recommendations and each
stud is installed correctly and torqued to specification. Improperly installed studs may cause severe track damage,
damage rear suspension wheels, and will adversely affect driveline efficiency.
