E-VES-II OPERATION NOTES
EV Actuator Servo Motor:
• The EV actuator servo motor is a “smart” actuator. It uses a Hall Effect sensor to measure angular movement.
Because of this, there is no measure of resistance to calculate angular movement.
• At engine start-up, or whenever the EV actuator is powered-up, it will always set the exhaust valves to the stage 1
“home” position. When it sets stage 1 position, it resets the internal degree counter to zero.
• If the engine is shut off or there is a power interruption to the EV actuator, the actuator must reset and set the stage 1
“home” position before it will return to normal operation.
• The EV actuator assembly is mounted to the bulkhead clip with three rubber mounts. The rubber mounts prevent
chassis vibration from potentially damaging the actuator’s internal circuitry. The actuator assembly will move slightly
during operation. In fact, because the push / pull cable mount shares the same bracket as the actuator motor, the
entire assembly can be unbolted from the chassis and held by hand above the engine and the system would
continue to work without issue.
• Only Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P1403 (Hardware Fault) and P1409 (Actuator Overheat) indicate the need to
replace the actuator with a new part. All other DTCs associated with the E-VES system should be diagnosed by
inspecting the wiring, wiring connectors or performing the E-VES re-learn procedure.
• Always inspect the actuator’s wire harness connector and verify the locking feature is engaged properly when erratic
E-VES codes / performance is encountered.
Push / Pull Cable:
• The push / pull cable is not adjustable.
• Differences in cable length / travel are accounted for when performing the E-VES learn procedure using Digital
Wrench.
• Cable operation can be tested by performing the Push / Pull Cable Travel Test.
E-VES Assembly:
• It is critical that both lower exhaust valves are parallel to each other when secured to the tie bar. If the lower exhaust
valves are not parallel with each other, the valves may scuff the cylinder slots during valve travel. Special Tool: PS-
51732 must be used when assembling the lower exhaust valves to the tie bar.
• The tensioner springs must be completely seated over the locating tabs in the exhaust valve base assembly.
• The exhaust valve base shaft bushings are not serviceable.
• The exhaust valve base seals must be inspected when the assembly is removed from the engine and replaced if
damaged or worn.
