CLEANING THE GATE
To open the gate for cleaning and occasional lubricating of the claw
mechanism, it is merely necessary to loosen the framing screw (Z) and
depress the claw withdrawal lever (X). (The claw withdrawal lever is not fitted
to 9.5mm. models).
The lens carrier should then be swung outwards on its hinges. It is not
necessary to remove the projection lens unless access to the claw is required.
Periodically the gate should be carefully cleaned to remove any dross which
may have accumulated in the film track.
This dross can usually be removed by wiping with a soft cloth. In very
obstinate cases it may be necessary to use a matchstick or similar material,
but in no circumstances should a metal scraper be used, as this may damage
the polished surface with consequent damage to film.
Particles of film dross may also collect on the grease with which the claw and
cams are lubricated. It is recommended that the lubricant should be removed
periodically and replaced with fresh grease.
LUBRICATION
Careful lubrication plays an important part in maintaining your Specto
projector. The projector is lubricated before it leaves the factory, but the
makers have no control over the conditions to which it may be subjected after
leaving the works.
The " heart" of the projector—precision gears, spiral and worm drives, ball-
bearings, etc. is especially well cared for in the matter of lubrication, because
it is all enclosed in a sealed gearbox and runs in a mixture of grease and oil.
This special lubricant should not require replenishing unless the gearbox
ceases to work satisfactorily. When a projector is new, excess lubricant will
always tend to exude through the shaft bearings, but when "run-in" this will
cease.
A drop of oil, preferably by means of a dipper, should be applied to the
following parts :-
1—Upper and lower sprocket spindle bearings (Fig. 3)
