When the battery is fully charged, the battery
monitor will change to show the battery time
remaining.
2.8.2. Turning On the Mechanical Cooler
The mechanical cooler should automatically turn on
when the power is applied to the unit. You may be
able to hear it and/or feel its vibration. If not:

Tap the Advanced button to display the first
Advanced Setup menu page (see Fig. 38,
page 47).

If the cooler is on, the upper-right menu
button will be labeled Turn Cooler OFF. If
it is labeled Turn Cooler ON, tap it to power
up the cooler.

Tap Back to return to the Survey Mode.
The Detective-EX’s internal battery does not have enough power to cool down the detector
from room temperature, so external power is required for cooldown. If you are using a standard
automobile battery as the external power source, note that detector cooling can significantly
discharge the battery.
A warm Detective-EX typically requires approximately 12 hours to cool to operating
temperature.
When the detector reaches operating temperature, the Detective-EX bias voltage will automati-
cally turn on. To see if the bias voltage status is On or Off, tap on Advanced, then Status. Until
the detector has cooled and the HV has automatically turned on, Detector Temp, Cold Tip
Temp, and HV Volt should read
ERR
, then switch to
OK
. At this point, the status indicator on
the Survey Mode screen will show
Ready
.
NOTE
You can turn the cooler off for a brief period (e.g., 10 to 20 minutes) without signifi-
cantly warming the detector. As soon as the cooler is restarted, the Detective-EX
typically shows a
Ready
status within a few seconds. In addition, the cooler can be
restarted at any time, without harming the detector crystal, regardless of whether the
detector is warm, partially cooled, or cooled to the operating temperature range.
