Analyze Why the Device Link Is Missing (Oracle Solaris)
When you use the

or ipadm(1M) man pages and you see an error message similar to the sample
below, perform these steps:

cannot open i40e0; link doesn't exist
...
1. Check the OS.
Use the
ipadm
(1M) command to plumb the driver. Refer to the Oracle Solaris
ipadm
(1M) man
page for instructions.
2.
Check that the adapter is seated properly in its slot, that the cables are properly
attached, and that the LEDs are functioning.
3.
Use the
prtconf
or
scanpci
command to ensure that the device is installed.
4.
If the device exists, check the
/etc/driver_aliases
file to ensure that the file
contains an
i40e
entry that corresponds to the name for the device.
5.
If the entry exists, check the
/etc/path_to_inst
file to ensure that the file contains
an
i40e
entry.
Removing a device and reseating it in another slot does not always clean up the device tree. If
this is the case, you must remove the device tree and reboot the server. For more information,
refer to the Managing Network Virtualization and Network Resources in Oracle Solaris 11.3 .
