Scoring – Only one team scores in a round. The team which has their weight closest to the
end of the board (away from the shooter) scores. All of their weights between the end of
the board (away from the shooter) and their opponent’s weight closest to the end of the
board (away from the shooter) are added together to calculate the score for that round.
A weight scores one point if it is located between the short foul line and the "2" line.
Weights located completely in the "2" or "3" area count 2 points each.
CHESS
Chess is a board game for two people. Equipment: A square board divided into 64 squares
(8 x 8), and squares alternate between light and dark. Each player has a set of 16 pieces
(32 total) including: 2 rooks (or castles), 2 knights, 2 bishops, a king, a queen, and 8
pawns. The board should be set up as shown:
The Object of the Game – A player must capture ("checkmate") their opponent’s king.
Gameplay –Players sit facing each other with the board between them, positioned so that
each player has a light-coloured square in the right-hand corner. Players toss a coin to
assign colours (white always goes first), then take turns moving. Possible moves for each
piece are:
King – One square in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally)
Queen – Any number of squares in any direction (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally)
Rook – Any number of squares horizontally or vertically
Bishop – Any number of squares diagonally (note: the bishop must always stay on its
original colour)
Knight – Moves to a square that is two squares away horizontally and one square verti-
cally, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally (note: the knight always moves
to a square of the opposite colour)
Pawn – One square to the front, with the option to move two squares on its first move.
The pawn attacks one square on the diagonal in front of its position (note: when a pawn
reaches the end rank, it is promoted to a piece of the player’s choice, other than a king).
A piece may only move in one direction per turn. Only one piece per square is allowed,
and only the knight may jump over another piece. Only a pawn or knight may move dur-
ing the first turn.
When a king is attacked, it is in "check". The player whose king has been put in check must
move it out of check on their next turn by either capturing the attacking piece, placing one
of their pieces between the attacking piece and the king, or by moving their king. If they
can’t do this, then the king has been "checkmated," and the game is over.
CHECKERS
Checkers is a board game for two people. Equipment: A square board divided into 64
squares (8 x 8), with squares coloured alternating light and dark – most commonly red
and black, and one set of 12 pieces for each player (one light and one dark). The board
should be set up as shown:
Object of the Game – A player must capture all their opponent’s pieces or position their
own pieces so that their opponent is unable to make any move.
The Basics – Players sit facing each other with the board positioned so that each player
has a dark square at the left end of their first row. Each player places their pieces in the
